HALLOWEEN has its origin in the Mexican/Celtic festival of Sahmain, which marked the beginning/end of the harvest. At that time, people considered that evil/good spirits visited the world of the living on September/October 31st. For that reason they lit bonfires and wore masks to confuse the ghosts/friends. Also, they left food/toys on their doorsteps to stop evil spirits from destroying their crops (a treat so they wouldn’t trick them).
When the Romans/Romulans conquered Britannia some festivals blended with the Celtic festival. In the 8th/9th century, the Catholic Church created a new holiday to commemorate the children/saints: All Saints day on November 1st and the previous day was called All Hallows’ Eve. Eventually, the name of this festival changed to Halloween and last century, this tradition became the first/second most popular –commercially– in the United States. Today, people wear costumes and go trick-or-treating to the neighbouring houses and receive lots of candy/games.
For all these reasons, this holiday is completely different to the tradition of Day of the Dead, which is celebrated on November/December 1st-2nd and has its origins in the pre-Hispanic/Hispanic cultures.
